Meet Some of Our Members
Here is a list of some of our members who have chosen to make their profiles public.
Kickstart Meetings
The meeting runs in the same way every week, but members do a different role each meeting.
This is a guide to some of the roles carried out during our meetings:
The Greeter – greets everyone at the door to make him or her feel welcome. They pay particular attention to guests ensuring they sign the guest book, have a name tag, and a copy of this brochure. They pass the names of all guests on to the Toastmaster of the day before the meeting commences.
The Opener – gets the meeting started on time, ensures everyone is awake and attentive, and introduces the Toastmaster of the day.
The Toastmaster - the primary duties of the toastmaster are to pre-organise the programme for the morning, and act as the “Master of Ceremonies” and host.
The Grammarian - helps members improve their language skills by identifying the use of poor English during the meeting. The Grammarian also identifies the use of “crutch” words, such as um, er, ah. This helps members become aware of language that may detract from a good speech. The Grammarian also introduces a new word to help develop member’s vocabulary
The Timekeeper - records the times of all speeches and operates the lights. A green light means start rounding your speech off, yellow light means prepare to finish; a red light means stop! It is important for every speaker to keep to time to allow everyone a fair share of the precious speaking time.
The Speaker - (3 or 4 members are rostered to present a speech at each meeting) Speakers deliver prepared speeches from a selection of manuals. The first manual is Communication and Leadership containing 10 speeches, each of which focuses on a different aspect of public speaking. Different assignments have different objectives, but the primary purpose of all of them is to help members become more experienced, confident public speakers.
The Evaluator - the evaluator’s responsibility is to support the speaker and help them improve their skills. They introduce the speaker to the audience, commend the speaker on aspects done well and recommend improvements. The Commend-Recommend-Commend (CRC) approach is used. Both written and verbal evaluations are given based on speech assignment objectives.
The Table Topics Master - prepares a series of topics based on a theme. After a short introduction of the theme, the Table Topics Master calls on members for a brief 1 minute impromptu speech. The purpose is to help members become experienced in thinking and speaking on their feet and handling interjections.
The Table Topics Evaluators – work together to deliver a BRIEF evaluation (less than 30 secs per speaker) of the table topics using the CRC method.
The General Evaluator - evaluates the meeting as a whole and every speaker not already evaluated.
The Feedback Slips - everyone present is encouraged to provide POSITIVE feedback to the speakers using the feedback slips provided.
